What started as a joke of "What would prison rules look like for a 100-metre sprint?" Has now, somehow, sprinted, stumbled, and warped its way into a fully realised, fully illustrated card game!
Ten years ago, a simple idea struck:
What if a running race could be turned into a card game?
Armed with nothing but scraps of paper and a pen, I began scribbling out rough gameplay ideas and cards.
Cutting them up into makeshift cards. I tested it. Then tested it again. And again. Every session with friends meant more tweaking, taking away broken cards, adding new ones, and refining how the race felt.
At 21 years old, I even tried my hand at sketching potential card art (spoiler: they were awful). But as the years went by, both the art and the gameplay evolved. I collaborated with talented artists, graphic designers, and play-testers, slowly bringing the vision into focus.
That's when life happened! Building a career, starting a family, and Wizard Race got shelved, half-complete, tucked away with other "maybe one day" dreams.
Then, years later, after a random phone call from one of my best mates, we decided:
Let’s finish what we started.
We dusted off the old prototypes, grabbed my ancient sketches, combined them with his graphic design wizardry, and teamed up with another brilliant designer to touch up the final polish.
Together, we completely overhauled Wizard Race’s art and gameplay. Keeping the original heart of the game alive while adding 15 brand new spell cards, rebalancing mechanics, and spending countless more nights play-testing to perfect the final version.
Now, after a decade of racing, spell-slinging, scrapping ideas, rebuilding, and levelling up the vision.
Wizard Race is finally ready to hit the track.
Thanks for being part of this wild sprint to the finish line.
